Recently I was flying on an early morning flight and I switched seats to a window seat to allow a couple to sit together. I like aisle seats but I understand the desire to sit with a spouse so I reluctantly changed seats. All of the window shades were closed around me which is normal. I understand that keeping them closed keeps the plane cooler. Therefore, I left mine closed even though I enjoy the window shade open. Then as we sat on the runway, I realized since I’m at the window I’m in control of the shades by me and I like them open.
There is the positive side to moving, I thought. I opened my window shade and I am so glad I did, because I witnessed a beautiful sunrise. I wanted to shout “Hey everyone open your window shades!” but as I looked around at all the closed window shades and busy focused people I realized I didn’t want to miss the moment just because they were busy; so I stared out the window, took pictures and was thankful my eyes and window shade were open.
I almost missed a beautiful sunrise, which is one of my favorite things, because I was following the crowd and I was temporarily pouting over my new seat. As I look at my sunrise pictures I took, I am reminded of how many times we get caught up in what isn’t right and are not thankful for where we are even if it doesn’t feel like your favorite place and isn’t the most comfortable.
I also believe too often we keep the metaphorical “window shade” closed in our own life. We close off what is hard to do, we close off what is uncomfortable to do or we stay closed to an idea, a relationship or opportunity because that is what everyone else is doing. I want to encourage you to open the window shade in your life right now, right where you are and see the beauty that awaits you. The beauty may take time or it may happen quickly because you opened with just enough time.
Remember, in any given situation you may be the only one with an open window shade but don’t despair you aren’t living everyone’s else’s life only yours. The opportunity for joy and success is greater with an open mind.
Open your window shade, beauty awaits!
